x.ai: plumbing, not a predator
Voice Agent Builder (beta, Jul 1) is an infrastructure layer — no white-label, no CRM, no outbound, no SMB distribution. It validates the category and sets a $0.05/min price anchor. It does not let a funeral home skip TCYM.
GHL fear: debunked (officially)
The $97/mo AI Employee Unlimited plan is real but OPTIONAL per sub-account. Pay-per-use is the explicit default, was never deprecated, and got CHEAPER in May 2026. No forced enrollment anywhere in official docs.
DIY: parked with tripwires
GHL metered (~$0.065–0.10/min) vs x.ai ($0.06/min) is a rounding error. GHL charges for the wrapper we would otherwise rebuild. Stay — but the exit is now priced, and four tripwires reopen the question.
🛰️ What x.ai actually shipped
Voice Agent Builder — beta, July 1, 2026. No-code packaging of their Dec-2025 Voice Agent API (OpenAI Realtime-compatible). The whole analysis lives in the gap between the two columns.
Has
- No-code builder: Plain-language agent setup on Grok Voice (speech-to-speech, single stack)
- Telephony: Free provisioned number + SIP/BYO (Twilio, Telnyx, Plivo)
- Booking: Native Google Calendar + Outlook connectors, email confirmations
- Knowledge base: Doc-upload collections (Word/PPT/Excel/HTML/JSON/MD) with RAG search
- Tooling: Function calling, remote MCP servers, web/X search
- Voice: 80+ voices, cloning from ~2 min audio, 25+ languages, speech tags
- Speed: Sub-second time-to-first-audio; #1 Big Bench Audio (independently verified)
- Price: $0.05/min audio + $0.01/min telephony — cheapest single-stack rate on the market
Lacks (why TCYM is safe)
- White-label / agency program: No sub-accounts, no branded dashboards, no reseller motion — zero signal
- CRM connectors: No GHL / HubSpot / Jobber — CRM actions require developer API work
- Native outbound: Docs are inbound-shaped; outbound only via third-party SIP orchestration
- SMS / A2P: No messaging story at all
- Vertical templates + SMB sales channel: Lives in a developer console; the buyer still does the integration thinking
- Compliance maturity: SOC 2 / HIPAA posture reported as still maturing; beta; Grok-locked
Net threat read: the exposure is price anchoring — “$0.05/min” is now googleable next to $399/mo — not disintermediation. A funeral director will never tune interruption sensitivity for tearful callers in a developer console. We don't sell voice minutes; we sell packaged judgment. Answer: the “Why not DIY?” block on thatcallyoumissed.com names the nickel-a-minute number first and sells the judgment.
💰 GHL AI pricing — actual current state
Official help docs, modified June 9–18, 2026. Three options, chosen per sub-account — the agency picks per client, every time. No auto-enrollment, no deprecation of metered pricing.
Pay-Per-Use
DEFAULTno monthly fee
Voice Engine $0.045/min + TTS $0.015–0.035/min + LLM tokens ≈ ~$0.065–0.10/min AI-side. Got cheaper + more granular in Apr/May 2026 (was $0.13/min bundled in Jan 2025).
AI Employee Growth
LIGHT$50/mo per sub-account
1,000 Conversation AI responses + 100 voice minutes/mo (inbound only, no outbound/widget). Overage bills at pay-per-use.
AI Employee Unlimited
CEILING$97/mo per sub-account
Unlimited voice (inbound + outbound + widget), chat, reviews. Fair-use clause is GHL’s lever. Stable at $97 since Jan 2025 — no increase found.
LC Phone telephony (~$0.01–0.02/min) applies on all three options — the $97 never covers it.
The confusion decoder — what Topher heard vs. what's real
“Summer of AI — get AI for free”
Jun 1 – Aug 31: only the AI Assistants (Ask AI, Workflow AI, Funnel AI…) are free — the cheap stuff. Voice AI is a separate opt-in one-time 30-day trial per sub-account, defaulting back to pay-per-use. Nothing is auto-assigned.
“$99 unlimited AI plan, half off”
Two different offers fused: (1) $97 AI Employee Unlimited exists (full price, optional); (2) “50% off” applies to the PLATFORM plans ($297→$148.50 etc.) for the first 3 months in flash windows. There is no official half-off-unlimited-AI offer.
“$497 Pro includes AI Employee”
False — affiliate garble. AI Employee is not free in ANY tier. What $497 uniquely gives is markup rebilling (default 10%, up to ~10x) + SaaS Mode. The $297 plan rebills at cost only. A flat-fee model needs neither until SaaS Mode.
🧮 Break-even math — funeral vertical
| Metered vs $97 Unlimited crossover | ~1,000–1,200 voice min/mo (~$0.08/min typical) |
| Typical funeral home volume | 50–150 calls × 3–4 min = 150–600 min/mo |
| → Metered COGS per funeral client | $10–60/mo against $399/mo revenue |
| Worst-case (runaway usage client) | Capped at $97 ≈ 24% of revenue — Unlimited is a ceiling, not a tax |
| Playbook | <100 min → Growth/metered · 100–1,000 min → metered · >1,000 min → flip that client to Unlimited |
The reframe: $97 Unlimited isn't a tax — it's a COGS ceiling. Nearly all TCYM funeral clients stay metered at $10–60/mo; a runaway-usage client caps at $97 against $399 revenue. Flip individual heavy clients per judgment. Exactly the model Topher intuited.
⏸️ Decision: stay on GHL — DIY parked, exit priced
The honest structural risk isn't the $97 — it's that GHL owns the COGS line and can reprice it unilaterally (the fair-use clause is their lever). A credible $0.06/min alternative existing is the negotiating floor: past a threshold, DIY-on-infra genuinely pencils. These reopen the question:
- ⚠Usage-based AI pricing deprecated or repriced upward
- ⚠Fair-use pushback on a heavy Unlimited client
- ⚠Any forced per-sub-account AI fee
- ⚠Structural pricing changes when Summer of AI ends Sept 1, 2026 — the natural screw-turn moment
